Understanding Alcohol and Drug Addiction:
an LDS* Perspective

Endorsement

Jeffrey R. Holland, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve, has said, that the Church is not a monastery for the holy, but a hospital for the sick. The members of the LDS Church are just awakening to the awful realities of the disease of chemical addiction that ravages many of its members. Addiction knows no boundaries. It has the capacity to strike anyone. Seeking the lost sheep includes rescuing those who have fallen into the mire of chemical addiction. Of all people in the world, Latter-day Saints have a very personal relationship with the only "Higher Power" in the universe capable of truly saving us from the ravages of life: our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Merlin Baker has a personal connection to this rescue operation, both as a parent of an addicted child and as a missionary working directly with LDS addiction recovery program. He has written a sensitive, very readable, and helpful discourse on the disease of addiction, and what we, as loved ones and "fellow citizens in the household of faith" can do to help those vulnerable and entrapped by this disease. It is a good read and recommended for all LDS leaders and families.
